What is Trauma Release Exercise (Tre)?

TRE stands for tension and trauma release exercise. TRE is a self-regulating tool that consists of 7 easy to learn exercises. The exercises activate a built-in reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating in the body. The shaking naturally calms the nervous system down leaving you feeling more calm and centered.

Session Format

In your Introductory Session, you’ll learn more about TRE, how it was developed, and experience the series of 7 exercises firsthand. Most importantly, you’ll have a trauma safe guide helping you along the way. 

Part of our work together will also include integrating this self-regulating tool into your everyday life. Together, we will establish a plan and I’ll share guidelines to ensure your safety once you begin practicing TRE on your own.

Sometimes our work will include a series of follow-up sessions because the support is necessary for your individual process. Other times after you learn TRE, it’s safe to continue on your own.

Once you learn TRE you will have a tool for life.

The Founder

TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli. The TRE process was brought to light after observing the natural shaking response in children and adults in traumatized communities. Dr. Berceli began to understand that the shaking response is what calms the nervous system down after a traumatic event. This shaking mechanism is innate to all animals and humans and a vital component to our ability to move on. 

Shaking has a Profound Impact on how you Feel.

As a way of protection, our bodies react to stress by contracting tighter and tighter. This inevitably leads to chronic disease and burnout. Whether the cause was an old trauma or a new daily stressor, our bodies have a natural mechanism to release tension and restore balance. We simply need to (re)learn how to shake it off.

Shaking breaks up muscular tension and stress held deep within the muscles of the body. Once this tension is reduced, the nervous system moves into a more safe and social state.

Learning TRE is a valuable process because once you learn how to practice this self-regulating tool safely and effectively, it’s something you can use for grounding anytime, anywhere on your own.
